Sharon Ball worked in broadcast journalism for nearly 40 years, the last 15 years with National Public Radio in Washington, D. C. She served progressively as a news producer, newscaster, fill-in news magazine host, and editor. As senior cultural editor, she oversaw NPR’s coverage of arts, media, race relations, and religion from 1993-2002. She moderated panel discussions for organizations such as Independent Sector and for Wake Forest University Divinity School, among others.
She served as guest faculty and National Advisory Board member for the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, and was named a senior scholar to the Fetzer Institute’s Fellows Program. Her journalism awards include two Gabriel Awards, an Alfred I. DuPont Award, and a Case Media Fellowship at Harvard University.
Sharon’s involvement continued after she moved to Upstate New York and became executive director of the Broome County Arts Council. She retired in 2015. She has been a special projects consultant to the Binghamton University Art Museum and the Teaching Empathy Institute, among others.
